The Krakow Town Hall Tower is one of the most significant buildings in the city, and each tourist respecting himself is just obliged to raise the viewing platform of the Tower just to look at Krakow from bird's eye panorama. And we in general have soft spot for different high-rise buildings - we like nothing better than, let's climb somewhere and the higher, so much the better. Therefore today's reporting is from one of the oldest buildings of Krakow - the Town Hall Tower. In 1257, Krakow had the opportunity the self-government, the so-called Magdeburg law. And there are the governing bodies, must be also the building where these city hall would be in session, and in the same year in the very heart of the city the construction of the town hall began. The building constructed from a brick and a stone staid on the Main Square of Krakow almost 600 years, but during the urban rehabilitation, in the early of the XIX century, its most part was taken to pieces, having kept only the 70-meter tower.
By the way, the Krakow Town Hall has quite serious deviation from the vertical - near 55cm. The fact is that in 1680 in the spire of the Tower the lightning struck, the heavy fire began as the result of which the building very seriously was damaged. To avoid the rock fall, the Tower began to be strengthened, but the deviation all the same remained.
Since 2003 the Town Hall Tower in Krakow is available to all tourists. Upstairs the small exposition of the Historical Museum and the viewing platform with which all center of Krakow is remarkably visible was placed. In September, 2012 the ticket price made about 7 zlotys that at the current rate just under €2. You buy the ticket and it is possible to go upward.
You must to rise very accurately not to break to yourself vitals. As well as in many medieval buildings, the stairs in the Town Hall of Krakow is made on a spiral. And do you know why? The fact is that when you attack and you rise from below, it is inconvenient to you to beat by a sword as the wall disturbs, and here to defend on the contrary it is very comfortably but only in case you are a right-handed person.
The above you raise, the narrow the stairs, thus the height of the steps constantly increases and sometimes reaches the 30-40th.
Above us waited for small disappointment: exits to balconies from which the most beautiful view of Krakow opens, were closed. Therefore everything we could do, it is to look at the city through a dirty glass.
And fine sights open from here: the Market Square and the St. Mary's Basilica plainly visible, in the distance it is possible to see the Wawel castle. A little bit even you envy pigeons - they don't need to press a nose to glass to admire a panorama of Krakow. 🙂
On the top most level of the Krakow Town Hall there is the old clock, confusable on that we saw during our visit to the Lviv Town Hall.
The exposition of the Historical Museum in the Krakow Town Hall is small and if to be more exact, it is very small - such micro exhibition. So if you decided to visit the Tower for the museum, you shouldn't spend time and money, better straight go to the undergrounds of Krakow - you will receive the colossal pleasure.
At that our virtual excursion in the Town Hall of Krakow also comes to an end. It is possible to visit still one of Stages of the folk theater which is located in the basement, or to have a bite in a small cozy cafe. By the way, the city basement under the Town Hall is only the small part of the known Krakow undergrounds. It appeared practically at the same time as the Town Hall, and long time was used as a prison which was called “Dorotka”, and there were rooms in which the executioner lived. Later, in the XV century, in the basement of the Town Hall the bar “Svidnits” opened which worked daily up to the beginning of the XIX century when the part of the Town Hall was demolished.
Funny thing is that you can't find this building on Google Maps by name search or even by address search! Just go to the main square and use our map at the end of this post to get there. Actually, you don't need a map - you can see it easily when you reach Rynek Square. 🙂
The Eros Bound
In front of the entrance to the Town Hall of Krakow it is possible to see the huge metal head. It is the sculpture of the Polish artist of Igor Mitoraj which carries the name “Eros Bound” (Eros Bendato). The sculpture appeared near the Town Hall walls in 2003 and was caused many disputes: one said that it must not be in such beautiful city as Krakow, others maintained that it will only decorate the Market Square. As the result the head was decided to be left, and it became one of the most popular sights of the Old City. A rare tourist passes by and doesn't have photograph taken near it. 🙂
The two-meter iron head inside hollow, and this its property with pleasure is used by children for their games.
The Guildhall is not only one of sights of this amazing city. Ahead a lot more really interesting places wait for us in Krakow - stay tuned!
